THIS IS NOT GUARANTEED TO WORK ON YOUR SYSTEM!
It works on mine, and I'm so nice to share, huh?
(Hey, you get what you pay for, right?) IT'S FREE.
_________________________________________________________________
SPOT.EXE is a parsing program that reads in UPINEWS files and
extracts the UPI Spotlight summaries to a text file sans the
control codes. Two versions are supplied: One adds '@X' color
codes before and after the headlines. The other does not.
_________________________________________________________________
To use SPOT, place it in a directory of your choice. SPOTnn.EXE
adds the '@X'color codes; SPOTnnA.EXE does not. Rename one file to
SPOT.EXE and delete the other.
The UPI_NEWS.* files must be UNZIPPED into the same directory. You may
need to rename a few as you unzip them since UPI uses the same filenames
at different hours of the day.(bylines?)
Run SPOT.EXE.
SPOT will read in all UPINEWS.* files and produce SPOT.TXT, which
you can rename and use as a bulletin or as text file input for a local
echo (?) or file on your BBS.
If your board uses different color codes, you can use a text editor to
globally replace the '@X09' and '@X03' with your own control codes.
You will notice duplicates on occasion. If they exist twice in the
UPINEWS files, they'll appear twice in SPOT. Some are mistakes, others
are updates, so I thought I had better leave them alone.
There are no guarantees this will work under your configuration. I use it
successfully under DesqView on an IBM compatible with 8MB RAM. I am
offering to SHARE this with you if you want to use it. I use on my
system as a bulletin I update twice daily. It was not intended to be
the answer to UPI_NEWS files. It is merely a TEMPORARY SOLUTION to get
SOME USE out of the UPI_NEWS files.
To me, the UPI_NEWS files are a fantastic resource. Our little
podunk newspaper won't carry HALF the articles I see in the UPI
feed and it's exciting to see what's REALLY going on in the world.
The fact that they are TIMELY is a big plus. I have in my bulletin,
news that people MIGHT SEE in the paper tomorrow. Most won't ever
be printed here. (Did you see the one about the fireballs chasing
people in Thailand?!!!)
This version of SPOT is free. Future versions may require registration.
F'req SPOT anytime from 1:315/30.
Praise the Lord and enjoy,
